New Comic Bookstores!

I went to a new comic book store today. I thought I read about another one in the area but then never came across it and it only shows up on google if I put in something about cards and games which is strange. It's also closer than the other crap one. I've been planning on going to Pittsburgh Comics in McMurray, PA. Saturday and I am still doing that but was curious about this new place.

I was able to get two of the five issues that I wanted to pick up today, Wonder Woman #10 and Doom Patrol #3 as well as ODY-C #10. Kind of disappointed by their selection and how they didn't have any Black, Glitterbomb, or Chimera Brigade. I hope to get these at Pittsburgh Comics Saturday. I might also go to another comic shop in Pittsburgh since I will be that close anyways.

With the new shop I found, it wasn't bad but the selection was just okay and they didn't seem to have any dollar bins. It was also one of those comic shops that is small and cluttered kind of, that I've read so much about with how a lot of comic shops are but it wasn't bad really. It had a lot of good reviews that made me feel more comfortable with checking it out. It also did just seem kind of cozier in a way and is really the size of a comic shop that is not going out of business in a year or two like the one that I am not going to anymore. The person running it seemed nice but I still feel awkward about going to a new comic shop and not sure what to expect really. I think I will stop there on Wednesday's to pick up what I can find and the stuff I can't get, I'll get on Saturday's at Pittsburgh Comics.

I am still super excited about going to Pittsburgh Comics Saturday. I am already fantasizing about how I will be going there on Saturdays after my drum lesson and maybe going into Pittsburgh at times too to have fun there. I also love the idea of picking up a bunch of comics and stopping at a coffee shop somewhere and drinking a bunch of coffee and reading comics. We don't even really have any coffee shops around here too which is weird. I also love that Pittsburgh Comics has a podcast and they have a show all about new releases and things called Comics Now. Looks like it might be a cable access show which would be too awesome to live in that area and to be able to watch it but you can also check it out online.

Comic Books Oh Yeah! is on twitter.

If anyone is interested, I'm on twitter. Sometimes it's better to share stuff in 140 characters or less and retweeting awesome comic book things is even better than that.

Wonder Woman #8 Review

Wonder Woman #8
Publisher: DC
Writer: Greg Rucka
Artist: Bilquis Evely

Rating: 9.5

The newest issue of Wonder Woman and it's all about the beginnings of Cheetah whose name is Barbara Ann Cavendish. Wonder Woman doesn't appear in this issue at all, that I am aware of. Who knows, with her powers, maybe she is lurking somewhere in the background. This story veers off to a degree by what has been going on with Wonder Woman teaming up with Cheetah but it's a good story and I like that Cheetah gets a whole issue. The beginning shows her as a child and her interest in Greek myths. Her dad was lame of course and tried to pressure her away from it but it didn't stick. Later it shows her trying to find out more about Amazons, where they might have lived.

Barbara Ann is an awesome character, she is a mix of both Indiana Jones and Marion even more so from Raiders of the Lost Ark movie. She drinks a lot, argues with assholes, is mostly on her own doing her thing. She goes on expeditions with people who are more than skeptical about her work and they try to ruin her findings. She goes from one place to another, trying to find out more. She eventually finds evidence of a twelfth queen, Lysippe which means there might possibly be eleven other queens with shrines of their own somewhere. Going from one place to another trying to figure out the key to what she is trying to find. Eventually she finds an uncharted island and believes it to be the island of Amazons but doesn't find anyone there so she is not sure if she actually found it or not.

I really liked this issue. I kind of hope there could be a spin off series or some one offs of Cheetah/Barbara Ann at some point because I can see there being so much that can be done with this character and all the stories of things she could get into, even before she became Cheetah. It is cool that a whole issue is devoted to her.

And with every issue of Wonder Woman, the artwork is one of the things that I always look forward to. More than any other comic, Sharp, Scott, and now Bilquis Evely who is new to this series, the artwork is always amazing. This newest series of Wonder Woman has been a total treat when it comes to great writing and great visual art.

Comics this week

I haven't had a chance to update about the stuff I got Wednesday or Saturday. I have gotten the least amount of single issue comics this week than ever so far. Although I have picked up two really good trades.

This week I got:

The new Doom Patrol #1 which at first I wasn't sure about but it's definitely growing on me and then some.

Wonder Woman #6. The last of Frank Cho's variants for Wonder Woman and this issue was okay but not great. It's definitely continuing with the story of Wonder Woman leaving the island for the first time and I am sure it will be more interesting.

I also got a trade of Watchmen and just started reading it yesterday. I like it so far. I also finally got Alan Moore's Writing For Comics which is interesting as well.

Then yesterday I was at the lcs for so long, going through all the new issues, dollar bins, trades, back to the new issues, then trades, debating on whether to get Vol. 1 of Morrison's Doom Patrol or Lemire's Sweet Tooth Vol. 1 hardcover. I was wanting the Doom Patrol but for some reason Vol. 1 starts at like issue #13 for some reason, only covers fifteen issues, and is pretty expensive considering I can find probably every issue in the dollar bins. I finally decided on the Sweet Tooth and it's only Vol. 1 of 6 which is a bit disappointing considering the price. I am at a crossroads about trades. I am just getting into them and like them in some ways but some are crazy expensive for how little is in them. I am really enjoying Sweet Tooth though and happy that I did pick it up.

Wonder Woman #5 Review

This issue continues with the story line of Wonder Woman trying to find out the truth about her life. This issue picks it up a notch and is at a faster pace than the other two issues which is good since it's been so slow and dragging it out a bit. This is my favorite issue so far with this story and this issue is really making me enjoy this whole Wonder Woman series. The artwork is amazing. The first shot of the city at night with the lighting is just perfect. I want a print of that shot so badly.

I am also loving Steve Trevor. The line he questions the villain about how he has a messed up view about masculinity is making me swoon for Steve right now. I really hope this comic and Steve continue with questioning these kinds of things with gender because I love it. I love that comics are bringing these issues up, a lot more than in other forms of media it feels to me and in this way, comics from some creators are doing a really good job of questioning gender that I haven't been seeing much of lately in other areas. Getting off on a bit of a tangent on this but it's something that I really like to see in comics.

Wonder Woman so far is the only comic I am following with the whole Rebirth thing at D.C. I am kind of curious about other comics I could be following but there really is nothing that piques my interest. Maybe I should ask about any other D.C. titles that are as good as Wonder Woman over at reddit.

New Comics Wednesday

Another nice day at my local comic shop. I've been reading a lot of good things about Moon Knight and wanted to check it out so I was able to get #1 of the most recent series and found a couple back issues in the dollar bins. Hopefully it's good. And supposedly I have a pull list but every week there is something not in it.

What I got today:
Wonder Woman #5 Frank Cho Variant
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #11
Tank Girl - Two Girls One Tank #4
Hellboy in Hell #10
Moon Knight #1 If I had known they were charging $5 for this I wouldn't have picked it up.

Dollar Bins:
Moon Knight #12
Moon Knight #14

Wonder Woman #4 Review

The newest issue of Wonder Woman and it continues the beginning of Steve Trevor landing on Themyscira. I liked this issue a lot and have been looking forward to reading more of this story line but it's a bit all over the place and seems a bit rushed. I wish they had broken down what was covered in this issue into two different issues because there was a lot of ground covered and it feels like it just skips past things. The queen decides that someone from Themyscira must take Steve back to where he came from and for that person to never be able to return.

There is a contest between all the Amazonians and when there are only three left, the queen decides that the winner will be the one who survives the weapon that comes from where Trevor is from. It's a bit nutty because the weapon is a gun and the Queen points it at the first person, shoots them, they get a hole in them, they obviously lost, lol. Same thing with the next person. Then it's Princess Diana's turn and they just skip when she gets shot and she is now the winner. Then she and Trevor are getting on his plane that is fixed. Another thing is that his plane is fixed by the Amazonians and it is invisible. I am only aware of Wonder Woman from the 70's tv show and I think one of the early 80's cartoons where her plane is invisible and it doesn't make sense since she can fly and the invisible plane thing is absurd. The invisible plane thing is almost salvageable here though since it's Trevor's repaired plane but it's still a bit ridiculous. But I am also not aware of all the different series of Wonder Woman and her in other mediums but supposedly in some, she doesn't fly at all and others in which she does. Maybe she doesn't fly at all in this new Rebirth series?

Continuing with the story, Princess Diana is leaving, never to return. Another part that seems rushed too. In the first issue of this story, she talks about wanting to see what is beyond Themyscira and now she is all of a sudden leaving her mother and friends and there isn't much to that since she is now already boarding the plane with Trevor. Maybe this part of the story should have been broken up into three issues actually. There should be maybe more of her and Trevor having more of a connection other than her just helping him get better from his injuries also or maybe even talking more with one another.

Maybe I had higher expectations with this story line but there is a lot happening in this issue and I can't say that it's not good but I would have liked for there to be more details about all that is covered.

The artwork with this issue was pretty good too. Not as good as the other story line's but with all the information and things going on, things had to move on quickly and the art for the scenes during the contest are the best part in this issue. I also do like Frank Cho's variant cover, one of the last few that he is doing for Wonder Woman but this one is great.

Wednesday Comics!

Another good day at the comic book store. Today I got a short box to store my comics and I added Kill or Be Killed and Tank Girl to my pull list. They are also adding the next series of Tank Girl that is starting up soon after Two Girls One Tank. The person working there is also special ordering Once Our Land #2 from another New Dimension Comics store so I will most likely be able to get that as well. He said it will probably come in a couple weeks.

New issues that I got this week:
Wonder Woman #4 Frank Cho cover.
Doctor Who Twelfth Doctor #8

I also picked up:
The Boys #7
The Trees #2

And from the dollar bins:
B.P.R.D. The Warning #1
B.P.R.D. 1946 #5
B.P.R.D. The Ectoplasmic Man One-Shot
B.P.R.D. The Black Flame #2
B.P.R.D. The Black Goddess #2
Incognito #4

It's Almost Wednesday Comics Day!

I haven't been to the comic book store in a week. I haven't gone a whole week from going there since the first week that I started reading comics a little over a month ago. It's an addiction at this point but one that I am doing kind of well to not let it get out of hand, lol.

Comics coming out tomorrow that I am looking forward to...

Wonder Woman #4 - Continuing the story of Steve Trevor landing on Themyscira. I have been looking forward to reading more with this story line.

Doctor Who The Twelfth Doctor Year Two #8. I just found out yesterday that the newest season is not starting back this fall but sometime in the winter or spring. It sucks and I was really looking forward to it soon and love watching this show in the fall. Hopefully the comic helps with there being no new episodes but I also just hope this is a good comic worth checking out. And I like Peter Capaldi as the Doctor. There are all kinds of issues with the other Doctors at the store so hopefully there is a lot to choose from still.

Other things I want to find are some comics of the Boys, the Trees, maybe some more of B.P.R.D, and if there are still any Animosity #1's still at the store.

I also want to get a box to store my comics in. And I need to add a couple things to my pull list, Kill Or Be Killed and Tank Girl.

New Comics Tomorrow

Tomorrow is new comics day. I want to definitely get Tank Girl - Two Girls One Tank #3 and I want to check out Battlestar Galactica #1. The covers of Galactica look nice. I am always hearing how good this show is but still haven't checked it out yet. I remember seeing parts of the really old movie from I think the early 80's and hoping the comic book version is good.

There isn't much else from the list of things coming out tomorrow that I am wanting at this point but that will change when I am checking them all out tomorrow. I still want to find some good comics to follow. I read Top 10 #2 and #3 and will read #4 in a bit and like it. The quirkiness of it and how things are just all over the place are interesting. I am going to find the rest that were with those in the dollar bin last week and hopefully I can get all of them except for #1 which wasn't there. I also want to find more of B.P.R.D. and check out a couple of the newer issues if they still have them.

I also really liked Tank Girl - Two Girls One Tank #1 and want to find a copy of #2 somewhere.

I am going to not go over $20 or so but I am also running out of comics to read other than a bunch of Wonder Woman that I still need to read but I like having more of a variety to read from every day. And with Wonder Woman, I really liked the Convergence #1 issue and would like to find #2.

Wonder Woman #3 Review

Following the story of  Wonder Woman trying to find out the truth about herself. The first issue starting with this story line didn't do much for me but I liked this issue and happy that both story lines with this series will hopefully be something good to follow. Wonder Woman finds her past friend and more recently foe Barbara Ann Minerva, the Cheetah and they agree to help one another out. I really like this character the Cheetah, seems like there is a lot going on with her, very complex, grey areas that she is dealing with. I am not familiar with both of their pasts together but like that they are into working together and being friends again if they were not in the past. Wonder Woman's compassion shines through in this issue more than any other comic I've read of her's so far.

Another great thing that I liked about this comic is that it confirms how great the artistic direction of this comic is going. I couldn't get enough of how good the art is. There is a thickness to it that I really liked, reminds me some kind of tattoo styles, especially the vividness of the coloring as well. It also kind of has a wood block printing feel to it as well.

So far the Rebirth Wonder Woman series has me completely hooked with the awesome art and two story lines going.

Comics I Got Today

Today was a good comics day. I spent a good amount of time in the dollar bins. I was hoping to find some of the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Tank Girl specifically among whatever else but couldn't find any of those. One thing that was weird also was that they had no Tank Girl in the alphabetized section. Strange.

What I got today:
Tank Girl: Two Girls One Tank #1. Surprised they still had this since it came out in June and it was the only copy. They didn't have any other issues. I don't know if it comes out monthly or what.
Bitch Planet #4

In the dollar bins:
Convergence: Wonder Woman #1
B.P.R.D. #1. Still looking for new comics and thought I would check these one's out.
B.P.R.D. #2
B.P.R.D. #3
Spiral Zone #1. This was a random find for sure. I used to love this cartoon when I was little and surprised there was a comic about it. It was a really dark cartoon I noticed recently when I tried to find episodes online and it is odd that it was actually for children.

Wednesday Comics!

I just got back from the comic book store. They didn't have the reprint of Batman Rebirth #1 but I did get #2. Along with Wonder Woman #3, with the Frank Cho cover, the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #10, and Batman Detective Comics #937. I also picked up Satellite Falling #3 which I am excited about.

And my copy of Once Our Land #1 came in! I still can't believe I was able to get a copy of it. Supposedly it sold out everywhere the day it came out and it's nice being able to get a copy a week later. The person there said it came in last night. I need to start learning the names of the people that work at my comic book store and their store is awesome. I also went through the dollar bins for a bit but didn't find anything that I wanted.

It's Almost Wednesday

It's almost Wednesday! I can't wait to pick up more Satellite Falling issues. Hopefully most of the one's that I need will still be on the shelf.

Wonder Woman #3 also comes out. Continuing the story of Wonder Woman trying to find Cheetah and to find out more about what is true or not about Themyscira. Comic Book Resources has a little preview http://www.comicbookresources.com/comic-previews/wonder-woman-3-dc-comics-2016

I also want to get Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #10, Ms. Marvel #9, and the third printing of Batman Rebirth #1.

I also read the Woods #5 last night and on the fence about whether I want to follow it or not. It was okay but I'm not completely sold on it yet. I do have the next issue to read as well which I might do tonight.

And I do want to check out some more comics to follow. It's kind of difficult to find really good comics to follow with how there are just so many to choose from.

Good Comics I Read This Week

I'm planning on writing about the best comics I read that week. I read new comics, older comics, and would like to talk about one's that are just too good to not want to at least share with others.

The first two issues of Satellite Falling have me already in love with this comic. I am glad to be starting with this comic at the very beginning. Steve Horton is the writer and they do a great job of crafting an interesting story and an environment that takes place on a satellite called in which the main character Lilly, tired of living on earth after a loved one dies along with all the racism, xenophobia, and corruption that does pretty much ruin the planet at times. She lives on a satellite inhabited by aliens with very few humans. It's a mixture of sci-fi, crime fiction, and action as Lilly tries to escape her past and tries to make a living for herself in her new place.

The artwork by Stephen Thompson, known for their work with Star Wars comics although I haven't checked them out yet but I love Thompson's art with this comic. As much as I like the story, the artwork is what I love more than anything. I love the detail of the environments and characters, the coloring, it really is just amazing. With all the comics I've been getting into lately, I really like the artwork of Satellite Falling the best.

I finally got to check out Hench Girl, issue #4 and I loved it. The peculiar world of Mary Posa in Crepe City is too hilarious. In this issue she has to deal with the complexities of being a villain and having to steal her roommates security key to get inside a building and their friends want her to go to meet some super hero's which is a bit awkward for her since they are her parents and sister. I'm not sure why she doesn't try to be a super hero since her family works in that department but maybe it doesn't pay as well as being a villain. There are still a bunch of this comic at my local comic shop and I might have to get as many as I can.

I wrote a review of Black Hammer #1 a few days ago but it should definitely still be on this list of awesome comics that I read this week. In the first issue the story is set up so perfectly even with all the characters in it. I also loved the artwork in this from Dean Ormston. There is kind of an autumn season vibe with the colors with it that I like and I can't wait to see what actually happened with Black Hammer since he is not in the first issue.

I love Bitch Planet #1. I am already trying to get all the issues that I can with this comic. A good mixture of dystopian science fiction, sexism, the prison industry, and people who don't fit in with societal pressures. This first issue was great on a lot of levels. The creepiness and how deranged a sexist patriarchy could actually be, the variety of characters, and the hilarious made up ads make this just a great well-rounded comic in so many ways.

Wonder Woman #2 is another one that I wrote a review for earlier. I will probably just write reviews for comics that I really like and talk about them still since I'm still consumed by them. If you haven't read this issue you, you totally should! I am so glad this comic comes out every two weeks, especially with how there are two story lines going back and forth.

I also got to finally check out Faith, issue #1. I will probably add it to my pull list. I love how this is a super hero that is so realistic and shows a more accurate portrayal of how a super hero's life maybe would be like. Getting a peak at all kinds of aspects of her life is what makes this comic so special. She is a super hero, living in a new city, has friends, some of which are her co-workers at her boring day job and a couple of them also happen to know that she is a super hero even though she tries to keep the two separated. I also thought it was hilarious when her friend who knows about her secret identity brings up how she could have a better looking super hero outfit even though she thinks it looks nice. She is probably the first super hero who is relatable in a lot of ways since she deals with all kinds of silly, random, awkward social situations like most people. I also really like that there is a super hero that is not a size 0 or whatever.

The New Wonder Woman Movie Trailer.

I am so excited for this movie and the trailer that was just released shows just how awesome this movie is going to be. And just in case you're wondering, there are only 313 more days until it comes out June 2nd 2117.

Wonder Woman - Rebirth #2 Review

I finally got the first two issues of Wonder Woman - Rebirth. The first issue was actually kind of a letdown. It was so short and the amount of actual content could have still been given in a third of its pages almost. I suppose it does fit the tone of the severity of how she is questioning what is actually the truth or not about herself and drawing it out. Maybe I was expecting more with the first issue.

The second issue I loved though and feel like it's a better first issue almost. I do like that every other issue will be dealing with Wonder Woman earlier in her life when she first meets Steve Trevor and in later years which is where the second issue starts off and this is definitely a very good beginning with that part of her life.  I'm also glad to see this new version dealing with her beginnings since I have only read about it but hadn't seen it in comic form.  It's interesting seeing the two different characters of Wonder Woman and Trevor with however many years in between them. In later years Wonder Woman looks like a character from He-Man almost while Trevor looks like a G.I. Joe which is kind of funny. I do like Wonder Woman's costume for the most part. She is still very sexualized which puts me off from it but it's better than being kind of cheesy mixed with being too sexualized but at least they finally dropped the cheesy part of it. I love Wonder Woman but her costumes always made me cringe a bit.

With the story in #2 it depicts her yearning for what is outside of Themyscira really well and right at the end is when Trevor's plane crashes on the island. I am excited to see her very beginnings from such an early point and happy that DC is doing a Rebirth with everyone now. Supposedly there are aspects of the very beginning that haven't really been touched on in the past that Rucka wants to bring up which should be good.

Saturday Comics Day/Not at Comic Con Day

I just got back from the Not at Comic Con thing at New Dimensions and it was definitely a good comic book day. You couldn't really tell that it was an event really since there were not that many people other than a few kids at a table learning to draw comics. I spent way more money than I was planning on spending but I am definitely happy with what I got. I also got some bags and backing boards. And I definitely took advantage of the dollar bins being $0.50 only today.

I also set up a pull list and asked about the Once Our Land #1 order from the other day and they looked it up and it is coming in from another New Dimensions location which is too good. I also got a bunch more new issues of things that I didn't pick up Wednesday. I am still in the beginning stages of collecting comics and exploring a lot to find what I like particularly but this is probably my last day of spending too much money all at once like this. Last night I read the couple of Saga issues that I got Wednesday, #33 & #36 and wasn't  really impressed with them. #33 was probably not the first issue to check out the series perhaps. One thing that I really like with this store and with living in this area though is that with the newest issues, they still have #1's and other issues going back months because not many people are interested it seems

What I got today:

Not At Comic Con Day

My local comic bookstore New Dimensions Comics in St. Clairsville, OH. is having a Not At Con Day event Saturday, July 23rd. It's something fun they are doing for people who can't go to Comic Con. They are going to have some quasi-local artists there like Kelci Crawford who does the artwork for the webcomic Validation. She is also doing a how-to-draw comics workshop for kids.

You can also get a 10% discount if you wear a cape of any sort. There will be some free stuff from Valiant Comics, IDW, and Zenoscope. The best part is dollar comics will be 50 cents! I can't remember the last time something awesome was being sold for only fifty cents. And I really like my local comic bookstore New Dimensions Comics. It's a nice laid back place, no rude employees, tons of comics with good finds in the dollar bins, and they seem female friendly which is nice. There are a few other branches of New Dimensions Comics around the Pittsburgh area that I should probably check out soon too.

I am probably a little too excited for this event, I've been looking forward to it for a couple weeks and hoping to get some good stuff. Last week I got too much stuff and right when I was checking out realized that I should have just waited another week for my awesome Wonder Woman dollar bin finds but I was so happy to come across so many in one box. With tomorrow, I am hoping to get more Wonder Woman comics, find some more Bitch Planet's, pick up a few Doom Patrol's, Ms. Marvel, look through the comics that came out this week and see if there is anything that I missed, and starting a pull list possibly.

I'm not sure if anyone in the area will see this but if you do, you should go to this event though. Here is the facebook event page. https://www.facebook.com/events/1562025807433026/

I wonder if there are any other comic bookstores doing something fun for those not going to Comic Con?
