Glitterbomb #1 Review

I liked this first issue of Glitterbomb, written by Jim Zub whose other current projects include Wayward, Thunderbolts, and Dungeons & Dragons. He also wrote Skullkickers. I am a bit worried Glitterbomb will become too sexualized with the characters, one or two of the variant covers seems like they might be going down that path and one or two frames but I really hope it doesn't. If they do so, it will ruin it for me for sure. I want to wait and see what the second issue is like before I really know if this is worth following or not but for the most part this first issue was good.

The story is about Farrah, an actor trying to get more acting work and dealing with the Hollywood industry. It reminds me a bit too much of the theatre industry which is a bit of a downer but it does show both in the same way in how they are filled with scumbags that mistreat others. Hopefully I am not constantly reminded of how the theatre world is and why I have been taking a break from it for a while and can just enjoy this comic, lol. I do love how Farrah takes care of people trying to screw her over even if it is a bit extreme in that moment in which she seems to have no control over once someone has passed that personal boundary of hers. This comic also kind of reminds me of Kill Or Be Killed in which the one's getting killed are horrible human beings that maybe had it coming. This is definitely more horror filled though and I love how this person takes care of assholes. I am curious to know how she got this power exactly. It's definitely intriguing and so far, has something to do with water which has me completely clueless at this point. I also like how Farrah has a kid and work to deal with while she is dealing with this crazy tongue of hers. I like the combination of realism and everyday life along with this fantastical set up. It's one of the things that makes me like Plutona a lot too even though that is slightly less realistic than Glitterbomb.

The artwork is really great too. Djibirl Morissette-Phan did the artwork and colors by K. Michael Russell. I read somewhere that Morissette-Phan was into making the environments a bit off like showing the sky in different colors and whatnot and I think it compliments the story line very well with how messed up this world is. Someone mentioned how they were hooked by the second page and I can see how. The artwork and scene on the second page is just perfect. The first two pages show you where this is going in as short a time as possible and just how fucked up and crazy this comic is going to be. 

Paper Girls #9 Review

I freaking love this comic! This issue just reaffirms how incredibly great Paper Girls is. It's really not surprising that this comic won an Eisner Award for "best new series" this year. They also won an award for "best penciller/inker or penciller/inker team" although there is a typo on one page which is odd.

This has been the best issue I've read so far although I haven't read all of them but it's so good. There is so much going on and with this issue and it's just all over the place. I am also just constantly amazed by the artwork. The full washes of color that are used which I cannot get enough of, the huge ship flying in the sky is awesome, like something out of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The environments are done so well also. And it's funny seeing downtown Cleveland from high up in the sky. I lived in Cleveland for a couple years, in Ohio City right next to downtown Cleveland and it's just funny to think that they are totally showing my street and my landlords glass blowing place if the scenes were drawn accurately, lol. They are pretty close enough too with the skyline of downtown Cleveland although they probably make Cleveland look a lot nicer than it really is since it's such an awful place. Maybe it wasn't back in the 80's but it's never evolved past 1987 anyways so it's fitting that Paper Girls takes place there.

If you haven't gotten into Paper Girls yet, you really should and usually it's not the best idea to start off with a comic with some random issue but this one will have you trapped into loving it.

At the Comic Shop Saturday

I stopped at the lcs yesterday and got some good things. There were a lot of people there which was surprising. They had some type of card game going but there were lots of people looking through comics which was surprising.

Glitterbomb #1 which was really good. I am glad I picked this up after hearing about it from others. It will probably end up on my pull list if #2 is good.

I also bought my first trade book. Black Science #1. I really liked the one later issue of Black Science that I read and so happy to get the first volume and start at the beginning. I've been spending a lot more time going through the books section but it's so hard to choose a whole book of something because I'm still new with finding series to follow and most of them are maybe newer things. Also, I really like floppies. 

Wednesday Comics

I didn't get a chance to post yesterday but it was new comics day although it was another week with not much to get with the newest releases. I did add Moon Knight to my pull list, got some more bags and boards because I already ran out with the last batch. I liked the last issue of Plutona and wanted more and usually back issues are still on the rack but not this time. I was able to find #1 and #2 in the section of comics individually priced. I got them both for $3.25 each and they didn't have #3 or #4.

I also finished vol. 2 of Incorruptibles and didn't really like it even though I did just finish it. Not going to check out anymore of Mark Waid's stuff most likely.

I am almost done with vol. 2 of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and like it a lot.

And I've still been hanging out in the comic books section of Reddit but it's starting to be kind of a disappointment, it's pretty much just a cesspool of extremely sexist, mostly racist white dudes. Anything even remotely questioning anything blatantly sexist or racist gets downvoted, and people seem to really love racist Mel Gibson there, lol. I don't get it.

Wonder Woman #5 Review

This issue continues with the story line of Wonder Woman trying to find out the truth about her life. This issue picks it up a notch and is at a faster pace than the other two issues which is good since it's been so slow and dragging it out a bit. This is my favorite issue so far with this story and this issue is really making me enjoy this whole Wonder Woman series. The artwork is amazing. The first shot of the city at night with the lighting is just perfect. I want a print of that shot so badly.

I am also loving Steve Trevor. The line he questions the villain about how he has a messed up view about masculinity is making me swoon for Steve right now. I really hope this comic and Steve continue with questioning these kinds of things with gender because I love it. I love that comics are bringing these issues up, a lot more than in other forms of media it feels to me and in this way, comics from some creators are doing a really good job of questioning gender that I haven't been seeing much of lately in other areas. Getting off on a bit of a tangent on this but it's something that I really like to see in comics.

Wonder Woman so far is the only comic I am following with the whole Rebirth thing at D.C. I am kind of curious about other comics I could be following but there really is nothing that piques my interest. Maybe I should ask about any other D.C. titles that are as good as Wonder Woman over at reddit.

Saturday Comics Day

Saturdays are the best day to spend with comics and being obsessed with them, lol. I went to the comic book store today, and they, New Dimension Comics has a new podcast episode up if you want to listen to it at http://ndcomics.com/podcast/ They talk about the newest comics that they are into and about the Suicide Squad movie. At the store, it was Free Graphic Novel day so I was able to pick one from the table. It was odd, really late in the day and there were still a lot of free books on the table. It's sad that more people are not going to this comic book store because it's so great. I got Incorruptible Vol. 2 by Mark Waid and Horacio Domingues.

And I got some good comics I think today.

New-ish Issues:
Tomboy #4. I've been wanting to check out this comic and finally did today.
Plutona #5. I am really getting into Jeff Lemire's work and wanted to see what this comic is about.

Dollar Bins:
Mildly Microwaved Pre-Pubescent Kung-Fu Gophers #1 The title is just hilarious and is probably a funny, loopy comic. Hopefully there is more than just one issue of this if it's good.

Doom Patrol #1 2001
Smax #4 I liked the few comics I read of Top Ten and curious about this since it's about one of the characters from that getting their own comic.

I am also loving the book Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud. Everyone should read this book, even if you are not into comic books it is so freaking intriguing and makes you look at a lot of things different. 

Comics I'm getting into lately.

I really loved 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank #1. Weird that the shop had one issue of that and #2 but nothing more. I plan on getting #2 Saturday. The kids remind me of a dirtier version of the kids from Bob's Burgers. I also like that I have no clue where this comic is going in terms of plot but the characters are awesome. One thing though is I am trying to find out more information about this comic and supposedly there are only going to be five issues of it? I forget where I got that number but I hope it's not just that few.

Also today I went to the library. I stopped going to the main library here because it's like the Walmart of libraries but I really wanted to see what kind of books they had about comic books and what kind of trades that they have and they do have a small selection. There is Wonder Woman and they even have Sleeper which is surprising. I picked up the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol. 2 and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Century: 1910. I've been wanting to read more of Moore's stuff since I did actually like the movies of the Watchmen and V. LXG was okay but probably better in comic book form. They also had his series of Swamp Thing. I was hoping to get a book about comic books, something non-fiction-ish but there was nothing at all. I am glad I got to see what trades are actually like, they seem so much better than with the single issues with all the crap ads and I like the paper quality too. And omnibuses are just amazing, I didn't know they were of like an entire series. They had an Ant-Man omnibus and one or two other one's. I think I would still prefer single issue comics to trades but maybe for something out of print I would get a trade.

Also when I was at the comic book store the other day, I ran into a co-worker while I was checking out. Weird, usually there is no one even in the store, lol but we chatted a bit and did so more at work about comics. He said he mostly reads Marvel and DC with the exception of also Saga. We talked a good bit about comics and I told him that I've only been into them for a couple months now and he is going to write up a list of some recommendations which I'm curious about. I still haven't checked out much with DC or Marvel yet.

And I am really enjoying B.P.R.D. the Black Goddess. So happy that I was able to get all the issues from the dollar bins.
